About This Drink
Vanilla Shake

The 7 Brew Vanilla Shake is a caffeine-free blended dessert drink made from 7 Brew proprietary ice cream mix, classic vanilla syrup, and ice - blended to a thick, spoon-resistant milkshake texture and topped with whipped cream on request. It contains 0mg of caffeine in every size, and calories run from 190 in the 10oz Kids size to 310 (Small 16oz), 490 (Medium 24oz), and 660 in the 32oz Large. Pricing starts at 4.00 for Kids and tops out at 7.50 for the Large.

Here is the part most people get wrong: 7 Brew shakes are not made by scooping hard ice cream. Every 7 Brew stand uses a dairy-based ice cream mix - a thick, sweet, vanilla-forward liquid base that sits somewhere between heavy cream and soft-serve batter. When the crew blends that mix with ice and pumps of flavor syrup, the ice does double duty as both thickener and chiller. That is why the Vanilla Shake tastes cleaner and lighter on the finish than a scooped-ice-cream diner shake, and why it never gets that slightly gummy, stabilizer-heavy texture some fast-food shakes have.

The Vanilla Shake is the purest expression of that base. Because the ice cream mix is already vanilla-leaning, adding classic vanilla syrup does not layer a new flavor on top - it amplifies what is already there, turning a subtle cream note into a full bakery-vanilla profile. That makes it the single best drink on the 7 Brew menu for judging the quality of the base itself, and it is the go-to order for kids, pregnant customers, late-night drivers who do not want caffeine, and anyone who thinks every other shake on the board is trying too hard. It is also the most flexible canvas at the window: nearly every viral 7 Brew shake hack starts with a Vanilla Shake and one added pump of something else.

Information for Vanilla Shake

Caffeine-Free
0mg in all four sizes - safe for kids, pregnancy, and late-night ordering with no modifications needed.
Contains Milk
The ice cream mix is dairy-based and is the primary ingredient. This is the only major allergen listed for the drink.
Vegetarian
Suitable for lacto-vegetarians as ordered, including the whipped cream topping.
Not Vegan
Cannot be made vegan as a true shake. Ask for a blended vanilla drink built on oat or almond milk with the ice cream mix removed and no whipped cream.
Not Keto Friendly
Even a Small carries 51g of carbs and 46g of sugar. Sugar-free vanilla syrup and half-sweet help but cannot bring this under keto thresholds because the ice cream mix itself is sugar-heavy.
Nut-Free
No nut syrups or toppings in the standard build. If you order alt milk, request almond milk only if nuts are fine for you - oat is the nut-free swap.
Gluten-Free Ingredients
No gluten-containing ingredients in the base, syrup, or whipped cream, though 7 Brew stands are not certified gluten-free environments.
Kid-Friendly
The 10oz Kids size at 190 calories and 28g of sugar is one of the most reasonable kid orders on the menu, and it is caffeine-free.

TASTE

What Does the 7 Brew Vanilla Shake Taste Like?

The first thing you notice is the aroma through the straw hole - warm, sweet, slightly custard-like, closer to vanilla cake batter than to a vanilla bean pod. The first pull is thick but not stubborn: it moves through a standard straw with mild effort, coating the tongue the way melted soft-serve does rather than the way a heavy scooped shake does.

Mid-sip is where the vanilla layering shows up. There are two distinct vanillas at work - the rounded dairy sweetness of the ice cream mix, and the brighter, slightly boozy-sweet note of the vanilla syrup sitting on top of it. Together they read as French vanilla or vanilla frosting, with a faint marshmallow edge as the drink warms in the cup. Sweetness is high and unapologetic; the Large carries 102g of sugar, and you feel that as a candy-like weight on the back of the palate.

The finish is cleaner than expected. Because ice is blended in rather than more dairy, the tail end fades toward cold cream and melts away instead of leaving a fatty film. There is no cocoa bitterness, no caramel burnt-sugar edge, no salt - just cream and vanilla the entire way down. Texture-wise it stays smooth for about ten minutes, then loosens into something closer to a vanilla milk, which is genuinely pleasant if you sip slowly.

INGREDIENTS

What's Actually in the 7 Brew Vanilla Shake?

Ice Cream Mix The dairy-based sweet cream base used in all 7 Brew shakes and smoothies - a pourable soft-serve style mix, not scooped ice cream. Source of the Milk allergen and most of the fat and protein.
Classic Vanilla Syrup Roughly 2 pumps in a Small and 4 in a Large. Adds bakery-style French vanilla sweetness on top of the base cream note. Sugar-free vanilla is available on request.
Ice Blended in to build thickness and chill - it is the structural ingredient here, replacing the frozen dairy a traditional shake would use.
Whipped Cream Optional topping added on request, roughly 30-50 extra calories depending on how heavy the pour is. Adds dairy but no additional flavor complexity.

Ingredients may vary by location. Always confirm with your barista.

First Time?

How to Order the Vanilla Shake for the First Time

Start with a Small (16oz, 5.50, 310 calories). This is the single most important piece of advice for this drink - the Vanilla Shake is very sweet, and a Large at 102g of sugar is genuinely a lot even for people who like dessert drinks. The Small gives you the full experience at a portion you will actually finish while it is still thick.

Order it exactly as-is on your first visit, with whipped cream, so you have a clean baseline. The Vanilla Shake is the reference point for every other shake on the 7 Brew menu, and once you know what the unmodified version tastes like you can judge the Tuxedo, the Caramel, and the Cookie shakes against it. If you already know you are sugar-sensitive, ask for half-sweet from the start - it is the most common modification on this drink and the crew makes it constantly.

Two things to expect. First, it is not a scooped ice cream shake, so do not go in looking for that heavy, straw-clogging pull - this is a smoother, more drinkable texture. Second, it thins out. Plan to drink it within about 10 to 15 minutes for the best consistency, and if you have a long drive, ask them to blend it thick.

If you love it, the natural next step is one pump of caramel added to a Medium. That is the most recommended upgrade among regulars and it costs almost nothing.

Pro tip: Don't be afraid to ask your brewista for recommendations — they love helping first-timers!

How to get a drink similar to the Vanilla Shake at other coffee chains

Similar flavored espresso drink
How to Order

Ask for a Grande Vanilla Bean Creme Frappuccino with whipped cream. To get closer to the 7 Brew ice cream mix richness, request it made with heavy cream instead of 2% milk and add one extra pump of vanilla syrup. Starbucks does not sell true milkshakes, so this blended creme base is the nearest match on their menu.

Key Difference

Close on flavor - both are pure sweet vanilla with no coffee. The Starbucks version is icier and lighter bodied because it uses a Frappuccino base syrup rather than a dairy ice cream mix, so it drinks thinner and finishes with more of a slushy edge.

Similar flavored drink
How to Order

Order a Medium Vanilla Freeze with no coffee added and ask for whipped cream on top. Dutch Bros Freezes are blended and use a milk-and-blender-base build rather than an ice cream mix, so if you want it closer to 7 Brew, ask for it blended thick with less ice.

Key Difference

Very close in concept - both are caffeine-free blended vanilla dessert drinks. The Dutch Bros Freeze is noticeably less rich and less sweet than the 7 Brew Vanilla Shake because Dutch Bros builds blended drinks on milk rather than a dairy ice cream mix, which is the same reason their smoothies come out fruity and sorbet-like instead of creamy.

7 Brew Medium (24oz): 6.50 works out to about 0.27 per ounce. Starbucks Grande Vanilla Bean Creme Frappuccino (16oz): roughly 5.75, or about 0.36 per ounce. The 7 Brew Large (32oz) at 7.50 comes to 0.23 per ounce - the best value of the group by a wide margin.

Best Time to Enjoy

Late evening is the Vanilla Shake sweet spot. Because it is completely caffeine-free at 0mg, it is one of the only genuinely indulgent orders you can grab at 8 or 9pm without wrecking your sleep - most of the 7 Brew menu is espresso, cold brew, or energy based, and a Medium cold brew can run over 200mg of caffeine. This is the drink for the after-dinner drive-thru run. It also earns its keep as a hot-afternoon treat. On a 95 degree day the blended ice texture and the clean, non-fatty finish hold up better than a scooped ice cream shake, which turns heavy fast in heat. Mid-afternoon between 2 and 5pm is when most people order shakes at 7 Brew, and it pairs well with a long drive because there is no caffeine crash on the back end.

I order the Vanilla Shake at least twice a week and it is the only shake I want anymore. It tastes like the inside of a vanilla cupcake but cold, and because there is zero caffeine I can grab one at 9pm and still sleep. My four year old gets the Kids size and it is the perfect amount - not a giant sugar bomb. The crew always blends it thick for me if I ask, which I appreciate.

Really solid shake and a great base for hacks - I get a Medium Vanilla with one pump of caramel and it is basically a butterscotch milkshake for six fifty. Only knock is that it thins out faster than a real ice cream shake. If you are eating in the car it is great, but after about fifteen minutes on the drive home it turns into vanilla milk. Drink it fast and it is a five.

Katherine Boyd3 months ago

It is well made, I just found it too sweet for me. I got the Large before checking the nutrition and 102g of sugar is a lot for one drink. Went back and asked for half sweet the next time and honestly that version is much better - you actually taste the cream instead of just sugar. If you like an old fashioned diner shake with real ice cream chunks and that heavy pull, this is going to feel lighter than you expect.

Copycat Recipe

How to Make the Vanilla Shake at Home

5 minutes
Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup half-and-half (this stands in for the 7 Brew ice cream mix)
  • 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk - this is the key to matching the ice cream mix sweetness and body
  • 2 tablespoons (2 pumps) Torani Classic Vanilla Syrup, or Monin Vanilla Syrup for a slightly rounder, less candy-like note
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract for aroma depth
  • 1 1/2 cups ice cubes
  • Pinch of salt (about 1/16 teaspoon) to keep the sweetness from flattening
  • Whipped cream for topping, optional
Instructions
1

Chill your blender jar and your serving cup in the freezer for 10 minutes. This is the single biggest factor in getting a thick 7 Brew style texture instead of a soupy one.

2

Add the half-and-half, sweetened condensed milk, Torani Classic Vanilla Syrup, vanilla extract, and salt to the blender. Pulse 3 or 4 times to combine the base before the ice goes in.

3

Add the 1 1/2 cups of ice all at once. Blend on high for 25 to 35 seconds - no longer. Over-blending melts the ice and thins the shake.

4

Check the consistency. It should slowly fold back on itself when you stop the blender. If it is too thin, add 1/4 cup more ice and pulse 5 seconds. If it is too thick to drink through a straw, add 1 tablespoon of half-and-half.

5

Pour into the chilled cup, top with whipped cream if using, and serve immediately. Homemade versions thin faster than the shop version, so drink within 5 minutes.

Lighter Version

Use sugar-free syrups and skip whipped cream to save 100-150 calories.

FAQ

Common Questions

How many calories are in a 7 Brew Vanilla Shake?
A 7 Brew Vanilla Shake has 190 calories in the Kids size (10oz), 310 calories in a Small (16oz), 490 calories in a Medium (24oz), and 660 calories in a Large (32oz). Nearly all of those calories come from the dairy ice cream mix and the classic vanilla syrup - a Large carries 112g of carbs, 102g of sugar, 26g of fat, and 15g of protein. To bring it down, order half-sweet to remove roughly 150-180 calories from a Large, switch to sugar-free vanilla syrup, or simply size down to a Small, which saves 350 calories versus the Large.
Does the 7 Brew Vanilla Shake have caffeine?
No. The 7 Brew Vanilla Shake is completely caffeine-free with 0mg in every size, including Kids, Small, Medium, and Large. It is built from ice cream mix, vanilla syrup, and ice with no espresso, cold brew, tea, or energy blend involved. If you want caffeine in it, you can ask for a shot of espresso added, which brings roughly 60mg per shot and turns it into an affogato-style vanilla shake. Without that addition, it is one of the safest late-night orders on the menu.
Is the 7 Brew Vanilla Shake made with real ice cream?
Not exactly. 7 Brew shakes are made with a dairy-based ice cream mix rather than scooped hard ice cream. The mix is a thick, sweet, pourable soft-serve style base that gets blended with ice and flavor syrup to build the milkshake texture. This is why the Vanilla Shake lists Milk as its only major allergen, and why the finish is cleaner and slightly lighter than a traditional diner shake. It also means the drink thins out faster as it sits, since the structure comes from blended ice rather than frozen dairy.
Can you get a dairy-free 7 Brew Vanilla Shake?
Not as a true shake. The ice cream mix is dairy-based and is the entire body of the drink, so removing it means the crew has to build a blended vanilla drink using an alternative milk like almond or oat instead. The result is drinkable and vegan-friendly if you also skip the whipped cream, but the texture lands much closer to a blended vanilla iced latte without espresso than to a milkshake. If you need a genuinely dairy-free blended option, a 7 Brew lemonade or 7 Fizz over ice is a safer bet, and both are also caffeine-free.
What can you add to a 7 Brew Vanilla Shake to make it better?
The Vanilla Shake is the most-hacked drink on the 7 Brew board because vanilla takes on anything. Popular additions include one pump of caramel for a butterscotch profile (adds about 20-40 calories), chocolate sauce for a black-and-white shake, a pump of white chocolate for a heavier dessert version, a shot of espresso for an affogato-style drink at roughly 60mg caffeine, or a small amount of a fruit puree such as strawberry to push it toward a strawberries-and-cream shake. Ask for it blended thick if you want a spoonable consistency, since the standard blend is on the drinkable side.
