About This Drink
Banana Shake

The 7 Brew Banana Shake is a caffeine-free blended dessert drink made from banana flavor syrup and 7 Brew proprietary ice cream mix, whipped with ice until it reaches thick milkshake consistency. A Medium (24oz) carries 490 calories, 74g of sugar, 20g of fat, and 0mg of caffeine, and it runs $6.50, with sizes spanning a 10oz Kids at $4.00 up to a 32oz Large at $7.50. It is one of the simplest builds on the entire 7 Brew menu - two components, one blender, zero espresso.

7 Brew is a drive-thru-only coffee chain that started in Rogers, Arkansas, and its shake lineup exists for the passenger seat crowd: people who pull up to the stand and do not want coffee at all. The shakes are not made with hand-scooped ice cream out of a tub. Every 7 Brew stand uses a dairy-based ice cream mix - think of a very heavy, lightly sweetened vanilla cream - that gets pumped into the blender cup along with flavor syrup and ice. That is why the Banana Shake lists Milk as its only allergen and why it tastes closer to an old-fashioned soda fountain shake than to a smoothie.

The distinction matters when you are deciding between this and the Banana Smoothie. Smoothies at 7 Brew use fruit purees blended with the ice cream mix, so they retain a little fruit tartness and pulp-like body. The Banana Shake skips puree entirely and leans on banana syrup, which pushes the flavor toward banana taffy, banana pudding, and banana Laffy Taffy rather than fresh fruit. It is unapologetically a dessert, and the runny-nostalgic banana-cream-pie flavor is exactly why regulars keep ordering it for their kids and for themselves on the way home from work.

Information for Banana Shake

Caffeine-Free
Confirmed 0mg in all four sizes. No espresso, coffee, tea, or energy blend in the build.
Contains Milk
The proprietary ice cream mix and the whipped cream topping are both dairy. Milk is the only listed allergen.
Vegetarian
Suitable for vegetarians as prepared. No animal-derived ingredients beyond dairy.
Not Vegan
Can be made vegan by replacing the ice cream mix with oat, almond, coconut, or soy milk and requesting no whipped cream. Texture becomes noticeably thinner and icier.
Not Keto Friendly
Even with sugar-free banana syrup, the ice cream mix keeps a Medium near 58-60g of sugar. There is no low-carb version of this drink.
High Sugar
A Medium delivers 74g of sugar and a Large delivers 102g - well above the American Heart Association daily added-sugar guidance of 25g for women and 36g for men. Half-sweet or a smaller size is the practical workaround.
Nut-Free As Built
No nut ingredients in the standard recipe, but shared blenders and almond-milk pitchers are present at every stand. Flag a nut allergy at the speaker.
Gluten-Free Ingredients
No gluten-containing ingredients in the syrup or ice cream mix, though 7 Brew is not a certified gluten-free facility.
Kid Friendly
Zero caffeine makes it appropriate for children. The 10oz Kids size at 190 calories is the recommended pour.

TASTE

What Does the 7 Brew Banana Shake Taste Like?

The first thing that hits is aroma, not flavor. Crack the lid and you get that unmistakable candy-banana perfume - the same note in banana Runts and banana Laffy Taffy - riding on a wave of sweet cream. It is loud, and it fills the car within a block of the window.

The first sip is thick. Not milkshake-so-thick-the-straw-stands-up thick, but noticeably heavier than a smoothie, with a velvety coating that clings to the roof of your mouth. Sweet cream from the ice cream mix arrives before the banana does, tasting like melted vanilla soft serve, and then the banana syrup blooms across the mid-palate: candied, slightly floral, more banana pudding than fresh fruit. There is no tartness anywhere in this drink, which is the biggest difference between the Shake and the Banana Smoothie.

Midway through, the ice does its work. As the blend loosens up, the texture shifts from soft-serve dense to drinkable-milkshake smooth, and the banana flavor actually gets easier to taste because the fat is diluted slightly. The finish is where the sweetness shows its teeth - a lingering sugary film with a faint synthetic banana edge on the back of the tongue, which is why so many regulars order it half-sweet.

Closest reference points: a banana cream pie filling, a Dole Whip crossed with vanilla milkshake, or a McDonald-style shake if it came in banana. It is dessert. Treat it that way.

INGREDIENTS

What's Actually in the 7 Brew Banana Shake?

Banana Flavor Syrup Sweetened banana-flavored syrup, roughly 2 pumps in a Small and 4 in a Large. No fruit puree or fresh banana is used. Sugar-free banana is usually available on request
7 Brew Ice Cream Mix The dairy base behind every 7 Brew shake and smoothie - a thick, lightly sweetened vanilla cream concentrate that provides nearly all of the fat, protein, and body. This is the source of the Milk allergen
Ice Blended in to build volume and set the shake texture. Ask for light ice for a denser, spoon-thick result or extra ice for a lighter, frostier drink
Whipped Cream Standard dairy topping added at the window unless you request it left off, which trims roughly 50-70 calories

Ingredients may vary by location. Always confirm with your barista.

First Time?

How to Order the Banana Shake for the First Time

Order a Small (16oz, $5.50) half-sweet with no whipped cream for your first try. That gets you 310 calories instead of 490, keeps the banana flavor readable instead of buried under sugar, and tells you within three sips whether the candy-banana profile is your thing. If it is, graduate to a Medium next visit.

Set expectations before you pull up: this is a dessert drink, not a fruit drink. There is no fresh banana in it. If you were hoping for something closer to a fruit smoothie, order the Banana Smoothie instead, which uses fruit puree and reads noticeably less candied.

Two ordering notes that make a real difference at the window. First, ask for light ice if you want spoon-thick soda-fountain texture, since the standard blend is straw-drinkable rather than dense. Second, if you are not a fan of artificial banana notes in general, ask for one pump of vanilla alongside the banana - it rounds off that Laffy Taffy edge on the finish and is the single most common save for skeptical first-timers.

Pro tip: Don't be afraid to ask your brewista for recommendations — they love helping first-timers!

How to get a drink similar to the Banana Shake at other coffee chains

Similar flavored espresso drink
How to Order

Order a Venti Vanilla Bean Creme Frappuccino. Starbucks does not carry a banana syrup and pulled fresh bananas from US stores back in May 2022, so a true banana shake cannot be built there. Some baristas can add a pump of hazelnut or toffee nut for depth, but you will not get banana flavor.

Key Difference

7 Brew uses a breve (half-and-half) base while Starbucks uses 2% milk by default. 7 Brew is typically creamier and sweeter.

Similar flavored drink
How to Order

Ask for a Dutch Frost - their blended ice cream drink - with banana syrup, and specify no coffee so it stays caffeine-free. Add chocolate sauce if you want the banana split version. Dutch Bros does not publish a named Banana Frost, so this is a custom order that most locations will build without issue.

Key Difference

Dutch Bros tends to run slightly sweeter. Both are drive-thru only chains with a similar vibe.

7 Brew Large (32oz): $7.50 = about $0.23 per ounce. Starbucks Venti Vanilla Bean Creme Frappuccino (24oz): roughly $6.45 = about $0.27 per ounce. You get 8 more ounces at 7 Brew for about $1.05 more, and it is the only one of the two that actually tastes like banana.

Best Time to Enjoy

Because there is 0mg of caffeine in every size, this drink has no cutoff time - it is one of the few things on the 7 Brew menu you can order at 9pm without paying for it at midnight. That makes it the go-to for evening drive-thru runs, post-dinner treats, and the passenger who does not drink coffee. Practically speaking, mid-afternoon and after dinner are where it shines. A Medium at 490 calories functions as a dessert course rather than a beverage, so it lands better as a 3pm reward or an after-dinner splurge than as a morning drink where the 74g of sugar sets up a crash with no caffeine to offset it.

My 7 Brew order for two years running. The Banana Shake tastes exactly like the filling of a banana cream pie and I mean that as the highest compliment. I get a Medium half-sweet with no whip and it is perfect - still creamy and thick but you can actually taste banana instead of just sugar. My four year old gets the Kids size since there is no caffeine in it, and it has become our Friday afternoon thing. The brew crew already knows the order by the time we hit the window.

Really solid dessert drink and the texture is legitimately shake-like, not watered down like some drive-thru blends. Only thing keeping it from five stars is that full sweet is a lot - I got a Large the first time and could not finish it, and then I looked up that it is 660 calories and 102 grams of sugar. Now I stick to the Small half-sweet and it is great. Also worth knowing it is banana syrup, not real banana, so do not expect a health drink.

Denise Alvarado2 months ago

Texture is fantastic and my kids love it, but the banana flavor is very artificial to me - it reminds me of banana Laffy Taffy instead of actual fruit. If you like that candy banana taste you will be thrilled. I ended up preferring the Banana Smoothie because the puree gives it a little bit of real fruit character. Not a bad drink at all, just not the one I reorder.

Copycat Recipe

How to Make the Banana Shake at Home

5 minutes
Ingredients
  • 1 cup (about 2 generous scoops) full-fat vanilla ice cream - Breyers Natural Vanilla or Tillamook Old Fashioned Vanilla work best
  • 1/3 cup half-and-half (or whole milk for a lighter shake)
  • 2 tbsp Torani Banana syrup, or 1.5 tbsp Monin Banana syrup, which is more concentrated
  • 3/4 cup ice cubes
  • Pinch of kosher salt - sharpens the banana and cuts the sweetness
  • Optional: 1/4 tsp vanilla extract for extra soda-fountain depth
  • Optional: whipped cream to top
  • Optional for a real-fruit version: 1/2 frozen banana, sliced, plus 1 tbsp of the syrup instead of 2
Instructions
1

Chill your blender jar and serving cup for 10 minutes in the freezer. This is the difference between a thick shake and a soupy one.

2

Add the half-and-half and banana syrup to the blender first, then the ice, then the ice cream on top.

3

Blend on high for 20-25 seconds only. Over-blending melts the mix and thins the texture - stop as soon as it is smooth.

4

Add the pinch of salt and vanilla extract, pulse twice to combine.

5

If it is too thick to drink through a straw, add half-and-half 1 tbsp at a time. If it is too thin, add 2 more tbsp of ice cream, not ice.

6

Pour into the chilled cup, top with whipped cream, and drink immediately.

Lighter Version

Use sugar-free syrups and skip whipped cream to save 100-150 calories.

FAQ

Common Questions

How many calories are in a 7 Brew Banana Shake?
A 7 Brew Banana Shake ranges from 190 calories in the Kids 10oz to 660 calories in the Large 32oz. The Small (16oz) is 310 calories, and the most commonly ordered Medium (24oz) is 490 calories with 82g carbs, 74g sugar, 20g fat, and 11g protein. Almost all of the calories and fat come from the ice cream mix rather than the banana syrup, which is why swapping to a sugar-free syrup only trims about 50-60 calories. To cut calories meaningfully, size down to a Small (saves 180 calories), order it half-sweet (saves 60-70 calories), skip the whipped cream (saves 50-70 calories), or ask for almond milk in place of the ice cream mix.
Does the 7 Brew Banana Shake have caffeine?
No. The 7 Brew Banana Shake contains 0mg of caffeine in every size - Kids, Small, Medium, and Large. It is built from banana syrup, ice cream mix, and ice with no espresso, coffee, tea, or energy blend involved, which makes it one of the safest picks on the menu for kids, pregnant customers, and anyone ordering late at night. If you want caffeine in it, ask for espresso shots blended in: 2 shots adds 120mg and only about 5 calories.
Is the 7 Brew Banana Shake made with real bananas?
No, and this is the most common misconception about it. 7 Brew shakes are made with flavor syrups blended into a dairy ice cream mix, not with fresh or frozen fruit. There is no banana puree, no banana slices, and no fresh banana anywhere in the build, which is why the flavor reads as banana cream pie or banana taffy rather than fresh fruit. If you want something with actual fruit content, order the Banana Smoothie instead - 7 Brew smoothies use fruit purees blended with the same ice cream mix, so they carry a little more fruit character and slight tartness.
What is the difference between a 7 Brew shake and a smoothie?
Both are blended and both use the same dairy ice cream mix as their base, so the difference comes down to the flavoring. Shakes are flavored with syrups and sauces - vanilla, chocolate, caramel, banana - which makes them sweeter and more dessert-forward. Smoothies are flavored with fruit purees, which gives them a fruitier, slightly tangier profile and a marginally lighter body. Neither is dairy-free by default and both list Milk as an allergen. If you want the most milkshake-like experience, get the shake; if you want something that leans fruit-forward, get the smoothie.
Can you get a 7 Brew Banana Shake dairy-free or vegan?
Not as it is built - the ice cream mix is dairy-based and Milk is the listed allergen for all four sizes. You can request that the ice cream mix be replaced with almond, oat, coconut, or soy milk blended with banana syrup and ice, which makes it dairy-free. Two things to expect: the texture becomes thin and icy rather than thick and creamy, and the calories drop dramatically, landing a Medium in roughly the 200-260 calorie range instead of 490. Also ask for no whipped cream, since the standard topping is dairy. Because 7 Brew stands share blenders and equipment across hundreds of drinks, anyone with a severe dairy allergy should mention it at the speaker so the crew can take extra care.
How much does a 7 Brew Banana Shake cost and which size is the best value?
Pricing is $4.00 for the Kids 10oz, $5.50 for the Small 16oz, $6.50 for the Medium 24oz, and $7.50 for the Large 32oz. On a per-ounce basis the Large is the best value at about $0.23 per ounce, versus $0.27 for the Medium, $0.34 for the Small, and $0.40 for the Kids. That said, the Large is also 660 calories and 102g of sugar, so most regulars find the Small or Medium a smarter buy for a dessert drink. The Kids size is the sleeper pick for adults who want a few satisfying sips without committing to a full dessert.
