About This Drink
Chocolate Shake

The 7 Brew Chocolate Shake is a caffeine-free blended dessert drink made from 7 Brew proprietary ice cream mix, chocolate sauce, and ice - blended to order in a drive-thru window. It contains 0mg of caffeine in every size, and calories range from 190 in the 10oz Kids cup to 660 in the 32oz Large, with the popular 24oz Medium landing at 490 calories, 82g of carbs, 74g of sugar, 20g of fat, and 11g of protein. Pricing runs $4.00 Kids, $5.50 Small, $6.50 Medium, and $7.50 Large.

Here is the part most people get wrong: 7 Brew shakes are not made with scooped hard ice cream the way a diner shake is. Every 7 Brew shake starts with the same dairy-based ice cream mix used across the shake and smoothie menu - think of it as a thick, cold, lightly sweetened vanilla cream base. The crew adds chocolate sauce (the same rich sauce that anchors the Mocha and the Tuxedo), drops in ice, and blends it in a commercial blender until it hits that pourable-but-thick milkshake consistency. That formulation is exactly why the Chocolate Shake tastes cleaner and less overtly "frozen custard" heavy than a fast-food shake, and why it goes down faster than you expect.

Because this is a shake from a coffee company, it also plays well with the rest of the menu. The chocolate sauce is not a candy-bar syrup - it has real cocoa bitterness underneath the sweetness, which is why regulars who find Wendy's or McDonald's chocolate shakes cloying tend to prefer this one. It is also the single most popular non-coffee order for kids and for late-night groups, since a whole car can order shakes without anyone getting jittery at 9pm. If you want it to behave more like a coffee drink, one shot of espresso turns it into an affogato-style mocha shake - a well-known 7 Brew hack that regulars swear by.

Information for Chocolate Shake

Caffeine-Free
Confirmed 0mg in all four sizes - safe for kids, pregnancy caffeine limits, and late-night orders.
Contains Milk
The ice cream mix is dairy-based. This is the only listed allergen and it cannot be removed without changing the base entirely.
Vegetarian
Suitable for lacto-vegetarians as served. No meat-derived ingredients.
Not Vegan
To get closest to vegan, request chocolate sauce blended with oat or almond milk and ice instead of ice cream mix, and skip whipped topping. Verify sauce ingredients with the crew.
Not Keto-Friendly
A Medium carries 82g of carbs and 74g of sugar. Even a half-sweet Small will land well above 30g of carbs. There is no keto version of a shake here - order a sugar-free iced latte with heavy cream instead.
Nut-Free as Standard
No nut ingredients in the standard build, but shared blenders and nut syrups on the line mean cross-contact is possible. Mention allergies at the window.
Gluten-Free Ingredients
No gluten-containing ingredients in the standard shake, though 7 Brew is not a certified gluten-free facility.
High Sugar
Kids 28g, Small 46g, Medium 74g, Large 102g. The Large exceeds the American Heart Association daily added-sugar guidance for adults by a wide margin - treat it as a shared dessert.

TASTE

What Does the 7 Brew Chocolate Shake Taste Like?

The first thing that hits you is aroma, not flavor - lifting the straw releases a cool cocoa smell, more like a bakery brownie batter than a candy bar. The first sip is startlingly smooth. There is no grit, no cocoa powder chalkiness, and no icy shards, because the ice is fully broken down into the ice cream mix rather than suspended in it. The texture sits right between a thick milkshake and a soft-serve float: heavy enough to hold the straw briefly, thin enough to actually drink through it without collapsing your cheeks.

Mid-sip, the chocolate opens up. It reads as milk chocolate first - sweet, dairy-forward, rounded - and then a faint dark-cocoa bitterness surfaces at the back of the palate, which keeps the whole thing from tasting like melted frosting. The ice cream mix contributes a soft vanilla-cream note in the background that most people register as "malt-adjacent" even though there is no malt in it.

The finish is where sweetness shows its hand. A Medium carries 74g of sugar, and by the last third of the cup that sugar coats the tongue and lingers, especially if the shake has warmed and thinned. Cold and fresh, it is beautifully balanced. Twenty minutes into a commute, it edges toward dessert-sweet. That is exactly why the half-sweet order (below) has become the regular fan move rather than a diet compromise.

INGREDIENTS

What's Actually in the 7 Brew Chocolate Shake?

Ice Cream Mix A cold dairy base similar to a thick vanilla cream or soft-serve mix - this is the body of the shake and the reason Milk is the listed allergen
Chocolate Sauce Rich cocoa sauce with real bittersweet depth, not a thin candy syrup - the same sauce used in the 7 Brew Mocha and Tuxedo
Ice Blended in rather than served over, which is what converts the mix into milkshake consistency instead of a pourable chocolate milk
Whipped Topping Standard on blended shakes unless you ask for it left off, which removes roughly 50-70 calories on larger sizes
Optional Espresso Shot Not standard - added by request to convert the shake into a mocha shake at 60mg of caffeine per shot

Ingredients may vary by location. Always confirm with your barista.

First Time?

How to Order the Chocolate Shake for the First Time

Order a Medium Chocolate Shake, half-sweet, no whipped topping. That is the honest best version of this drink for a first try. You still get 490-ish calories worth of real dessert but the reduced chocolate sauce lets the cocoa bitterness show up instead of drowning under sugar, and skipping the topping saves 50-70 calories you would not have tasted anyway.

If you are unsure whether you want a full dessert, start with the Small at $5.50 and 310 calories. Sixteen ounces of shake is more than most people expect, and a Medium or Large frequently ends up half-finished and melted. Splitting a Medium between two people is also completely normal at the window - ask for a second cup.

Set your texture expectations correctly: this is not a spoon-thick Chick-fil-A or Steak n Shake milkshake. The ice cream mix plus blended ice produces a smoother, more drinkable consistency that sits between a milkshake and a frappe. If you want it thicker, ask for less ice and it will hold better.

Two hacks worth knowing on day one. First, add one espresso shot (60mg caffeine, about 5 calories) if you want it to taste less sweet and more grown-up - this is the most common regular modification. Second, if you like chocolate but want more complexity, the Tuxedo shake layers white chocolate over dark and is the natural next order after this one.

Key Difference

Dutch Bros tends to run slightly sweeter. Both are drive-thru only chains with a similar vibe.

7 Brew Small (16oz): $5.50 = $0.34/oz. Starbucks Grande (16oz): about $5.95 = $0.37/oz. 7 Brew Large (32oz): $7.50 = $0.23/oz versus Starbucks Venti (24oz) at about $6.45 = $0.27/oz - you get 8 more ounces for roughly a dollar more.

Best Time to Enjoy

This is the 7 Brew order that fits into the parts of the day when coffee does not. Because it is 0mg caffeine, an 8pm Chocolate Shake will not touch your sleep - which makes it the go-to for post-dinner drive-thru runs, movie-night grabs, and after-practice reward stops with kids in the car. Mid-afternoon is the other sweet spot, specifically the 2pm to 4pm window when you want something cold and indulgent but already had your coffee. If you still need a lift, one blended espresso shot (60mg) turns it into a mocha shake without pushing you past the point of no return for bedtime.

I have tried every shake on the 7 Brew menu and the plain Chocolate is still the one I keep coming back to. It does not taste artificial at all - there is actual cocoa bitterness under the sweet part, which is more than I can say for most drive-thru shakes. I order a Medium half-sweet with one shot of espresso and it is basically a frozen mocha for six-fifty. My kids get the Kids size and it keeps the peace on the way home from practice.

Brittany Sanderson1 month ago

Really good chocolate shake and the texture is smoother than a Chick-fil-A shake, which surprised me. Only knocking a star because a Large is enormous and by the bottom it had melted into sweet chocolate milk. Now I get the Small, no whipped cream, and it is perfect. Also nice that it is caffeine free so I can grab one at night without wrecking my sleep.

Kevin Odom3 months ago

It is a solid shake but honestly a little too sweet for me straight off the menu. Seventy-four grams of sugar in a medium is a lot and I could feel it. Half-sweet fixed most of it, and the Tuxedo has more going on flavor-wise if you want chocolate with some complexity. If you want plain classic chocolate though, this delivers exactly that and nothing more.

Copycat Recipe

How to Make the Chocolate Shake at Home

5 minutes
Ingredients
  • 1 cup (about 2 generous scoops) full-fat vanilla ice cream, softened 5 minutes - Breyers Natural Vanilla or Tillamook Old Fashioned Vanilla work best because they are cream-forward rather than eggy
  • 1/3 cup whole milk (use half-and-half for a closer match to 7 Brew richness)
  • 2 tablespoons Torani Dark Chocolate Sauce or Ghirardelli Black Label Chocolate Sauce - the darker sauces replicate the cocoa bitterness 7 Brew has under the sweetness
  • 1/2 cup ice cubes (this is the step most copycats skip and it is what creates the 7 Brew texture)
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of kosher salt to sharpen the cocoa
  • Whipped cream to top, optional
Instructions
1

Chill your blender jar and serving cup in the freezer for 10 minutes so the shake does not thin out while blending.

2

Add milk and chocolate sauce to the blender first and pulse 3 times to fully dissolve the sauce - adding it after the ice cream leaves streaks.

3

Add softened ice cream, vanilla extract, and salt. Blend on low for 10 seconds only.

4

Add ice and blend on high for 20-25 seconds until no ice fragments remain and the shake pulls away from the sides in a single mass.

5

Pour into the chilled cup. It should coat the straw but still move freely. If it is too thick, add milk 1 tablespoon at a time; too thin, add 2 more ice cubes and pulse.

6

For a mocha shake version, add 1 ounce of chilled espresso or 2 tablespoons of strong cold brew before the ice.

Lighter Version

Use sugar-free syrups and skip whipped cream to save 100-150 calories.

FAQ

Common Questions

How many calories are in a 7 Brew Chocolate Shake?
A 7 Brew Chocolate Shake ranges from 190 calories in the Kids 10oz size to 660 calories in the Large 32oz. The Small 16oz is 310 calories and the most-ordered Medium 24oz is 490 calories with 82g of carbs, 74g of sugar, 20g of fat, and 11g of protein. Nearly all of those calories come from two places - the dairy ice cream mix (fat and protein) and the chocolate sauce (sugar). To reduce them, order half-sweet to remove roughly 15-20g of sugar, skip the whipped topping to save about 50-70 calories, or size down from Medium to Small to cut 180 calories instantly.
Does the 7 Brew Chocolate Shake have caffeine?
No. The 7 Brew Chocolate Shake contains 0mg of caffeine in all four sizes - Kids, Small, Medium, and Large. It is built from ice cream mix, chocolate sauce, and ice with no coffee, espresso, or tea component, and the chocolate sauce contributes a negligible trace amount at most. That makes it one of the safest late-evening or kid-friendly orders on the entire 7 Brew menu. If you want caffeine, ask for espresso shots to be blended in at roughly 60mg per shot - one shot on a Small or two shots on a Large.
Is the 7 Brew Chocolate Shake made with real ice cream?
Not scooped ice cream, no. 7 Brew shakes are made with a proprietary dairy-based ice cream mix - a thick, cold, lightly sweetened cream base - which is blended with flavor sauce and ice to order. There is no soft-serve machine and no hand-dipped ice cream involved. This is why the texture is smoother and slightly lighter than a traditional diner or fast-food milkshake, and why Milk is the only listed allergen. It also means the shake thins out faster than a hard-ice-cream shake once it warms up, so drink it within the first 15-20 minutes.
Can you get a dairy-free 7 Brew Chocolate Shake?
You can get close, but not a true dairy-free shake. The ice cream mix that gives the shake its body contains milk, so the workaround is asking the crew to blend chocolate sauce with an alternative milk (almond, oat, or coconut where available) and ice instead. The result is a chocolate frappe rather than a milkshake - noticeably thinner and icier - but it removes the dairy and typically brings a Medium well under 300 calories. Always confirm with the crew, and note that cross-contact in shared blenders is possible, which matters for severe milk allergies.
What is the difference between the 7 Brew Chocolate Shake and the Tuxedo?
The Chocolate Shake is straightforward - chocolate sauce plus ice cream mix, blended, 490 calories in a Medium, 0mg caffeine. The Tuxedo is a dark chocolate and white chocolate blend, so it reads sweeter and creamier with a distinct vanilla-forward white chocolate layer on the finish. If you want classic, familiar, chocolate-milkshake flavor, get the Chocolate Shake. If you want a richer dessert with two chocolate notes playing against each other, get the Tuxedo. Both are caffeine-free as shakes unless you add espresso.
