About This Drink
Caramel Breve

The 7 Brew Caramel Breve is an espresso drink made with caramel syrup and steamed or chilled half-and-half instead of milk, and it ranges from 250 calories in the 10oz Kids size to 570 calories in the 32oz Large, with 60mg to 240mg of caffeine depending on size. A Small (16oz) runs $4.50 with 330 calories, 25g of sugar and 120mg of caffeine, while the Medium (24oz) is $5.50 with 490 calories and the Large is $6.50 with 570 calories and a full four shots of espresso.

The word breve is the giveaway here. In coffee shop language, a breve is a latte built on half-and-half rather than whole milk, and half-and-half carries roughly three times the fat of 2% milk. That single swap is the entire personality of this drink. At 7 Brew - the drive-thru-only chain that started in Rogers, Arkansas and now runs on lightning-fast lanes and a crew that chats with you through the window - half-and-half is the house default on the 7 Originals, so the Caramel Breve is essentially the stripped-down, no-frills version of that signature 7 Brew texture. No hazelnut, no chocolate, no white chocolate. Just espresso, caramel, and cream.

That simplicity is exactly why regulars order it. The Blondie and the Sweet and Salty layer multiple syrups on top of the breve base, which is delicious but busy. The Caramel Breve lets you actually taste the espresso and the caramel separately, with the half-and-half smoothing the seam between them. It is available hot, iced, or as a Chiller (7 Brew blended), and it takes customization better than almost anything on the menu - half-sweet, sugar-free caramel, extra shots, or a milk swap all change it meaningfully without breaking it. If you have ever thought a Starbucks caramel latte tasted thin or watery, this is the drink that fixes that complaint.

Information for Caramel Breve

Contains Milk
Half-and-half is the base of every size. This is a milk allergen across all preparations, including the Chiller. There is no version of a standard Caramel Breve without dairy.
Vegetarian
Yes. Espresso, caramel syrup, and half-and-half contain no meat or gelatin.
Not Vegan (modifiable)
Ask for oat, almond, or coconut milk in place of half-and-half and confirm the caramel syrup rather than caramel sauce is used - drizzle sauces are typically dairy-based. Oat milk gets closest to the original texture.
Gluten-Free Ingredients
No gluten-containing ingredients in the standard build, though 7 Brew is not a certified gluten-free facility and shared equipment is used.
Keto-Adaptable
Order sugar-free caramel with half-and-half and skip whipped cream. A Small comes in around 5-7g net carbs from lactose with high fat - one of the most keto-workable orders on the entire menu.
High Fat
A Large carries 35g of fat, most of it saturated dairy fat. Roughly half of a typical adult daily saturated fat allowance in one drink.
Nut-Free
The standard build contains no tree nuts or peanuts. If you substitute almond milk you obviously introduce a tree nut - specify oat if nut allergies are a concern.
Moderate to High Caffeine
Ranges from 60mg (Kids) to 240mg (Large). The FDA general guidance for healthy adults is 400mg per day, so a Large is 60% of that in a single cup.

TASTE

What Does the 7 Brew Caramel Breve Taste Like?

The first thing that hits before you even sip is the aroma - warm cooked-sugar caramel with a dark roast edge underneath, more butterscotch than candy. Hot, it steams up out of the lid and smells like a caramel roll.

The first sip lands soft. Half-and-half coats your tongue immediately, so nothing tastes sharp or acidic the way a straight latte can. The caramel arrives right behind it, sweet but rounded, closer to a caramel sauce stirred into cream than a hard candy. Mid-sip the espresso finally shows up, and this is where the Caramel Breve earns its place - the roast bitterness cuts diagonally through all that fat and keeps the drink from turning into melted ice cream. In the Large, with four shots, that coffee backbone is genuinely assertive.

The finish is the memorable part. Because of the butterfat, the caramel lingers on your palate for a good ten or fifteen seconds after you swallow, with a faint salted-butter note on the tail end. It is a heavy, satisfying finish, not a clean one.

Iced, the profile shifts brighter and the espresso reads stronger since cold suppresses sweetness perception. The Chiller version blends it into something closer to a caramel milkshake with coffee in it - thicker mouthfeel, sweeter up front, the espresso pushed to the background. Hot is the version that best shows off the caramel.

INGREDIENTS

What's Actually in the 7 Brew Caramel Breve?

Espresso 1 shot Kids, 2 shots Small and Medium, 4 shots Large - pulled fresh to order, not pre-brewed
Half-and-Half Equal parts whole milk and light cream, roughly 10-12% butterfat - this is what makes it a breve rather than a latte and accounts for most of the 35g of fat in a Large
Caramel Syrup Pourable cooked-sugar caramel with vanilla and butter notes, dosed by size - roughly 2 pumps Small, 3 Medium, 4 Large. Sugar-free caramel is available at no charge
Ice Standard in the Iced version, blended into the drink in the Chiller version. Light ice is available if you want more liquid per dollar
Whipped Cream Optional topping, not standard. Adds roughly 50-80 calories and 5-8g of fat depending on portion

Ingredients may vary by location. Always confirm with your barista.

First Time?

How to Order the Caramel Breve for the First Time

Start with the Small Iced at $4.50. It is 330 calories, 25g of sugar and 120mg of caffeine - the same two shots as the Medium, so you get a stronger coffee-to-cream ratio for a dollar less. If you like it and want more volume later, move up to the Medium and add a shot.

If you are coming from Starbucks and normally drink a Caramel Macchiato or a Caramel Latte, expect this to taste noticeably richer and heavier. That is the half-and-half, not extra syrup. Some people love it immediately and some find it too much on the first try - if you land in the second camp, do not write it off, just reorder with whole milk or half-sweet.

Hot is the version to try first. The heat pushes the caramel aroma forward and the espresso reads cleanest. Save the Chiller for a hot afternoon when you want dessert more than coffee.

One practical note: this drink is filling. A Medium at 490 calories with 9g protein legitimately functions as a light breakfast for a lot of people. Do not order it after a big meal expecting a light sipper.

Pro tip: Don't be afraid to ask your brewista for recommendations — they love helping first-timers!

Key Difference

Dutch Bros tends to run slightly sweeter. Both are drive-thru only chains with a similar vibe.

Best Time to Enjoy

Morning is the natural slot. The fat content slows caffeine absorption slightly, so the 120mg in a Small tends to feel like a steady climb rather than a spike, and the 9-11g of protein in the larger sizes makes it more sustaining than a black coffee. Mid-afternoon works well for the Small or Kids size, but be careful with the Large - 240mg of caffeine after about 2pm will still be measurably in your system at bedtime for most adults, since caffeine has a half-life of roughly five to six hours.

I switched from a Starbucks caramel macchiato to the Caramel Breve about eight months ago and I am never going back. The half-and-half makes it taste like it costs twice as much. I get a Small hot with an extra shot and half sweet - it is around 300 calories that way and the caramel actually tastes like real caramel instead of syrup water. The crew at my location knows my order by the time I pull up to the second window. Best coffee value in town.

Jenna Whitcomb1 month ago

Really good and legitimately rich - you can tell immediately it is not made with regular milk. My only note is that the Medium and the Small both come with two shots, so the Medium tastes noticeably weaker for a dollar more. Once I started adding a shot to the Medium it was perfect. Also be aware the Large is 570 calories, which surprised me. Iced is my preference; hot version the caramel gets a little sweeter than I want.

Ray Osterman2 months ago

Good drink, just heavier than I expected. I ordered a Medium iced and it sat in my stomach like a milkshake - 29 grams of fat will do that. If you want a straightforward caramel coffee this is honestly too much cream for me. I reordered it with oat milk the next time and liked it a lot better, though at that point you lose the whole point of a breve. Fine drink, just know what you are signing up for.

Copycat Recipe

How to Make the Caramel Breve at Home

5 minutes
Ingredients
  • 2 shots espresso (about 2oz) - or 4oz strong Moka pot or Aeropress coffee
  • 10oz half-and-half (do not substitute milk if you want the real texture)
  • 2 tbsp (1oz) Torani Caramel Syrup or Monin Caramel Syrup - Torani reads sweeter, Monin reads more buttery
  • Optional: 1/2 tsp Torani Sugar-Free Caramel to boost flavor without more sugar
  • Optional: pinch of flaky sea salt
  • Ice, for the iced version
Instructions
1

Pull 2 shots of espresso directly into your mug or a heatproof measuring cup. If using a Moka pot, brew 4oz and let it sit 60 seconds so the harshest bitterness settles.

2

Add the caramel syrup to the hot espresso and stir for 10 seconds. Doing this while the espresso is hot dissolves the syrup fully and is the step most copycat recipes skip.

3

For hot: steam 10oz of half-and-half to about 145F. Half-and-half foams less than milk and scorches faster, so keep the wand shallow and stop early. Pour over the espresso mixture.

4

For iced: fill a 16oz glass two-thirds with ice, pour in the caramel espresso, then top with 10oz cold half-and-half and stir once.

5

Finish with a pinch of flaky salt if you want the Sweet and Salty variation. Skip whipped cream - 7 Brew does not add it by default and it muddies the caramel.

Lighter Version

Use sugar-free syrups and skip whipped cream to save 100-150 calories.

FAQ

Common Questions

How many calories are in a 7 Brew Caramel Breve?
A 7 Brew Caramel Breve ranges from 250 calories in the Kids 10oz size to 570 calories in the Large 32oz. The Small (16oz) has 330 calories, and the Medium (24oz) has 490 calories. The majority of those calories come from half-and-half rather than the caramel syrup - a Large carries 35g of fat versus 29g of sugar. To cut calories, swap to whole milk (drops a Medium from 490 to roughly 300 calories) or order sugar-free caramel (drops a Medium to about 435 calories). Doing both brings a Medium under 260 calories.
What is the difference between a breve and a latte at 7 Brew?
A breve uses half-and-half as the dairy base, while a latte uses regular milk. Half-and-half is roughly 10-12% butterfat compared to about 3.25% for whole milk, so a breve is significantly richer, thicker, and higher in calories. At 7 Brew, half-and-half is the default base for the 7 Originals, which is part of why those drinks taste heavier than the equivalent order at other chains. A Medium Caramel Breve at 490 calories versus a caramel latte made with whole milk at roughly 300 calories is the practical difference.
How much caffeine is in a 7 Brew Caramel Breve?
Caffeine depends entirely on shot count: Kids (10oz) has 60mg from 1 shot, Small (16oz) and Medium (24oz) both have 120mg from 2 shots, and Large (32oz) has 240mg from 4 shots. Because the Small and Medium carry identical shot counts, the Small is actually the stronger-tasting drink per ounce. Many regulars add an extra shot to the Medium for about $0.75, bringing it to 180mg. The FDA considers up to 400mg per day safe for most healthy adults, so a Large represents 60% of that in one cup.
Is the 7 Brew Caramel Breve keto friendly?
It can be, with one modification. Order it with sugar-free caramel syrup and keep the half-and-half base. That takes a Small from 25g of sugar down to under 5g - the remaining carbohydrate is naturally occurring lactose from the dairy, roughly 5-7g net carbs for a Small and about 9-11g for a Medium. The high fat content from half-and-half actually works in your favor on keto. Skip whipped cream and avoid the Chiller version, which uses additional sweetened base. The standard full-sugar version at 31-37g of carbs is not keto friendly.
Should I get the Caramel Breve hot, iced, or as a Chiller?
Hot is the best showcase for the caramel - heat volatilizes the syrup aromatics so you smell butterscotch before every sip, and the steamed half-and-half is at its silkiest. Iced reads stronger on coffee because cold suppresses sweetness perception, and it is the version most regulars order year round. The Chiller is the blended version and drinks much more like a caramel milkshake with coffee in it - sweeter up front, thicker, with the espresso pushed to the background. If you want a coffee, order hot or iced. If you want dessert, order the Chiller. Nutrition figures listed here reflect the hot and iced builds.
