About This Drink
Salted Caramel Macchiato

The 7 Brew Salted Caramel Macchiato is a layered vanilla-and-espresso drink finished with a salted caramel drizzle, ranging from 220 calories and 60mg of caffeine in a Kids 10oz to 370 calories and 240mg of caffeine in a Large 32oz. Prices run $3.00 for Kids, $4.50 Small, $5.50 Medium, and $6.50 Large, and it is available Hot, Iced, or as a blended Chiller. It sits in the Macchiato family on the 7 Brew menu, which means it is built in reverse from a latte: vanilla syrup goes down first, then milk, then the espresso shots are poured on top so they "mark" the drink, and the salted caramel drizzle goes over the whole thing.

That build order matters more than most people realize. Because 7 Brew does not stir a macchiato before handing it out the drive-thru window, the first few sips are dominated by espresso and salted caramel, while the sweet vanilla milk waits at the bottom. Give the cup a shake and it becomes a completely different drink - smoother, sweeter, and closer to a caramel latte. Both versions are legitimate, and regulars have strong opinions about which one is correct.

7 Brew is a drive-thru-only chain out of Rogers, Arkansas, and the Salted Caramel Macchiato is one of the drinks that best shows off the chain approach to sweetness: generous by default, endlessly adjustable on request. Unlike the 7 Originals such as the Blondie or Brunette, which use a half-and-half or chocolate milk base, this macchiato is built on regular milk, which keeps it lighter on the palate. The salt in the caramel drizzle is the whole point - it cuts through the vanilla and keeps a 48g-sugar Medium from tasting like liquid candy. If you like sweet coffee but want something with a savory edge and real espresso bite, this is the macchiato to order.

Information for Salted Caramel Macchiato

Contains Milk
Every size lists Milk as the only allergen. The vanilla syrup and salted caramel drizzle are the other sugar sources.
Vegetarian
Suitable as served - no meat or gelatin-based ingredients.
Not Vegan by default
Ask for oat or almond milk AND skip the caramel drizzle, since most commercial salted caramel sauces contain dairy. Without the drizzle it becomes a vanilla macchiato.
Not Keto Friendly
A Small carries 45g of carbs. A keto-leaning version is sugar-free vanilla, heavy cream or breve, no drizzle - roughly 5g net carbs but no longer a salted caramel drink.
Gluten-Free Ingredients
No gluten-containing ingredients, though 7 Brew is a shared drive-thru prep environment with no certified allergen protocol.
Nut-Free as served
Contains no tree nuts or peanuts unless you request almond milk or add a nut syrup like hazelnut or macadamia.
Caffeinated
60mg Kids, 120mg Small and Medium, 240mg Large. Ask for decaf espresso if you want the flavor without the stimulant.
High Sugar
39g to 51g depending on size. The FDA daily value for added sugar is 50g, so a Large hits or exceeds a full day in one cup unless you modify it.

"Can I get a Medium Salted Caramel Macchiato. Thank you!"

TASTE

What Does the 7 Brew Salted Caramel Macchiato Taste Like?

Pop the lid and the aroma hits first: buttery caramel and warm vanilla with a sharp espresso edge underneath, the way a caramel candy smells when it is one second from burning.

The first sip, unstirred, is almost entirely espresso and drizzle. You get bittersweet crema, a quick hit of toasted caramel from the topping, and then a small but distinct flick of salt on the sides of your tongue. It is bolder than people expect from a drink with 42g to 51g of sugar, because none of that sugar has reached the top of the cup yet.

Two or three sips in, the vanilla milk starts mixing on its own and the drink shifts. The texture turns rounder and softer, the roastiness drops back, and vanilla takes over the midpalate - not artificial-tasting vanilla, more like the sweetened condensed milk note in a Vietnamese coffee. The salt reappears on the finish and keeps the sweetness from lingering too long.

Iced, the espresso stays crisper and the salt reads sharper against the cold milk. Hot, the caramel goes deeper and more butterscotch-like, and the whole thing drinks like dessert. The Chiller version is the sweetest of the three - blending distributes the syrup evenly so you lose the layered contrast, but you gain a milkshake-thick texture. If you want to actually taste the "macchiato" part, order it Hot or Iced and stir it yourself, halfway.

INGREDIENTS

What's Actually in the 7 Brew Salted Caramel Macchiato?

Espresso Freshly pulled shots poured last so they float on the milk - 1 shot Kids, 2 shots Small and Medium, 4 shots Large
Milk Standard 2 percent dairy milk fills most of the cup and carries the vanilla; swappable for oat, almond, coconut, or breve
Vanilla Syrup Pumped into the bottom of the cup before the milk, roughly 2 pumps Small, 3 Medium, 4 Large; sugar-free vanilla available at no charge
Salted Caramel Drizzle A thick sauce, not a thin syrup - clings to the inside of the cup and supplies both the salt and most of the caramel flavor
Ice Standard on the Iced build; blended into the drink itself on the Chiller version, which is why the Chiller tastes more diluted at the end

Ingredients may vary by location. Always confirm with your barista.

First Time?

How to Order the Salted Caramel Macchiato for the First Time

Order a Medium Iced Salted Caramel Macchiato with extra caramel drizzle - $5.50, 330 calories, 120mg of caffeine. The Medium is the sweet spot because it holds two espresso shots in 24oz, so the coffee is present without overpowering the vanilla, and it is the size most regulars default to.

Do not stir it right away. Take two sips as-is to experience the espresso-and-salt layer the macchiato build is designed for, then swirl the cup and taste again. That comparison tells you exactly how you want it made next time - some people go straight to "pre-stirred," others stay team unstirred forever.

If you already know you prefer less sweet coffee, order it half-sweet from the start. At full sweetness a Medium carries 48g of sugar, which is more than most people expect from something labeled a macchiato. If you are coming from a Starbucks Caramel Macchiato, expect the 7 Brew version to be sweeter and saltier, with a softer espresso profile.

Hot is the better choice below 50 degrees - the caramel deepens into butterscotch. Save the Chiller for a hot afternoon when you want dessert instead of coffee.

How to get a drink similar to the Salted Caramel Macchiato at other coffee chains

Similar flavored espresso drink
How to Order

Order a Grande Iced Caramel Macchiato and ask the barista to add a pinch of salt or sea salt topping to the caramel drizzle. The default Starbucks version uses vanilla syrup, 2 percent milk, espresso poured on top, and caramel drizzle - the same architecture as the 7 Brew drink, just without the salt built in. If your store carries the Salted Caramel Cream Cold Brew topping, ask for that sweet cream on top instead.

Key Difference

7 Brew uses a breve (half-and-half) base while Starbucks uses 2% milk by default. 7 Brew is typically creamier and sweeter.

Similar flavored drink
How to Order

Ask for a Medium Iced Salted Caramel Breve, or specify "Salted Caramel latte with regular milk" if you want to avoid the half-and-half base Dutch Bros uses by default in a breve. For the blended equivalent to the 7 Brew Chiller, order a Salted Caramel Freeze.

Key Difference

Dutch Bros tends to run slightly sweeter. Both are drive-thru only chains with a similar vibe.

7 Brew Large (32oz) $6.50 = about $0.20 per ounce. Starbucks Venti Iced Caramel Macchiato (24oz) runs about $6.25 = about $0.26 per ounce. You get 8 more ounces at 7 Brew for $0.25 more.

Best Time to Enjoy

Mid-morning is the natural window for this one. A Small or Medium at 120mg of caffeine is roughly the same jolt as a strong cup of drip coffee, and the 42g to 48g of sugar pairs better with a stomach that has already had breakfast - drinking it on an empty stomach at 6am tends to produce a fast spike and a hard crash by 10. The Large deserves a warning. At 240mg of caffeine it is close to two-thirds of the FDA 400mg daily adult limit in one cup, and if you drink it after 3pm it will still be measurably in your system at bedtime, since caffeine has a half-life of about five hours.

I have been ordering this three or four times a week since a coworker made me try it. Get it iced, extra drizzle, do NOT stir it for the first couple sips - you get straight espresso and salt and then it slowly turns into vanilla caramel milk as you go. It is basically two drinks in one cup. The Medium is the right size, the Large is honestly too much sugar for me even though the four shots are tempting.

Jenna Whitfield1 month ago

Really good and I like that the salt actually shows up instead of being a marketing word. My only complaint is consistency - one location gives me a beautiful layered drink and the next one over hands me something already fully mixed and way sweeter. Started asking for half-sweet vanilla and that fixed it either way. The hot version in winter is genuinely better than the iced, the caramel goes butterscotchy.

Trevor Nakamura3 months ago

Solid drink, wrong drink for me. I came in expecting a traditional macchiato and this is a sweet vanilla latte with caramel on top - 48g of sugar in a Medium is a lot. Once I ordered it sugar-free vanilla with two extra shots it became something I actually enjoy, but at that point the drizzle is doing all the work. If you like sweet coffee you will love it. If you drink your espresso black, order the Americano instead.

How to Make the Salted Caramel Macchiato at Home

5 minutes
Ingredients
  • 2 shots (2oz) freshly pulled espresso, or 4oz strong Moka pot coffee
  • 1.5 tbsp (0.75oz) Torani Vanilla Syrup, or Monin Vanilla for a rounder, less candy-like note
  • 10oz whole milk or 2 percent milk, cold
  • 2 tbsp Torani Puremade Salted Caramel Sauce, or Ghirardelli Sea Salt Caramel Sauce for a thicker drizzle
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • Flaky sea salt, such as Maldon, a small pinch for finishing
Instructions
1

Drizzle 1 tbsp of the salted caramel sauce in a spiral inside a chilled 16oz glass, letting it run down the walls. Warm the sauce for 8 seconds in the microwave first so it flows instead of clumping.

2

Pour the vanilla syrup into the bottom of the glass and swirl once to combine with any caramel that pooled there.

3

Fill the glass to about three-quarters with ice, then pour in the cold milk. Do not stir - the syrup should stay at the bottom.

4

Pull two fresh espresso shots and pour them slowly over the back of a spoon held just above the milk surface. Poured correctly, the espresso will float and create the visible layer that defines a macchiato.

5

Finish with the remaining 1 tbsp of salted caramel sauce over the top and a small pinch of flaky sea salt.

6

Serve with a straw and let the drinker decide when to stir. For a hot version, steam the milk to 150F, build in the same order, and skip the ice.

Lighter Version

Use sugar-free syrups and skip whipped cream to save 100-150 calories.

FAQ

Common Questions

How many calories are in a 7 Brew Salted Caramel Macchiato?
A 7 Brew Salted Caramel Macchiato ranges from 220 calories in the Kids 10oz to 370 calories in the Large 32oz. The Small 16oz has 250 calories, and the popular Medium 24oz has 330 calories. Most of those calories come from the vanilla syrup and salted caramel drizzle - a Medium carries 48g of sugar and 51g of total carbs, plus 10g of fat and 9g of protein from the milk. To cut calories, order half-sweet vanilla to drop a Medium to roughly 285 calories, switch to sugar-free vanilla for about 265 calories, or swap to almond milk to shave another 50 to 70 calories off a Large.
How much caffeine is in a 7 Brew Salted Caramel Macchiato?
Caffeine is determined by espresso shot count: the Kids 10oz has 60mg (1 shot), the Small 16oz has 120mg (2 shots), the Medium 24oz also has 120mg (2 shots), and the Large 32oz has 240mg (4 shots). Because the Small and Medium have identical caffeine, the Small is the stronger-tasting of the two - the same espresso in 8 fewer ounces. The Large at 240mg is about 60 percent of the 400mg daily caffeine limit the FDA considers safe for healthy adults. You can add an extra shot for 60mg more, or request decaf espresso to bring it under 5mg.
What is the difference between a 7 Brew macchiato and a latte?
The difference is build order and how much the drink is mixed. In a 7 Brew macchiato, the vanilla syrup goes in first, then the milk, then the espresso is poured on top so it sits as a distinct layer and is not stirred in. A latte has the espresso combined with the milk from the start, so every sip tastes the same. Practically, this means the first sips of a Salted Caramel Macchiato taste strongly of espresso and salted caramel, while the bottom of the cup is sweeter vanilla milk. If you prefer even flavor throughout, just ask for it pre-stirred - the nutrition is identical at 330 calories for a Medium either way.
Is the 7 Brew Salted Caramel Macchiato sweet?
Yes, it is one of the sweeter espresso drinks on the 7 Brew menu. A Medium contains 48g of sugar and a Large contains 51g, which meets or exceeds the FDA daily value of 50g of added sugar. The salt in the caramel drizzle offsets some of that perception, so it does not taste as sugary as the number suggests, but it is closer to a dessert coffee than a traditional macchiato. If you want it less sweet, order half-sweet vanilla to bring a Medium down to roughly 36g of sugar, or sugar-free vanilla for around 33g. Even at sugar-free, the caramel drizzle still contributes real sugar since 7 Brew does not offer a sugar-free version of the sauce.
Should I get the Salted Caramel Macchiato hot, iced, or as a Chiller?
Iced is the most ordered and best showcases the layered macchiato build - the cold milk keeps the espresso layer distinct and the salt reads sharper. Hot is the better pick in cold weather because heat deepens the caramel into a butterscotch note, and it is the only version where you smell the drink before you taste it. The blended Chiller is the sweetest and most dessert-like of the three because blending distributes the syrup evenly and destroys the layering; it tastes closer to a caramel milkshake with coffee in it. All three versions carry the same listed nutrition, so choose based on texture, not calories. First-timers should start with Iced.
