About This Drink
Banana Bread Mocha

The 7 Brew Banana Bread Mocha is an espresso mocha built on a chocolate milk base with banana syrup and hazelnut syrup, and it is one of the most dessert-leaning drinks in the entire mocha lineup. A Small (16oz) runs 220 calories with 120mg of caffeine, a Medium (24oz) is 340 calories with 120mg, and a Large (32oz) climbs to 450 calories with 240mg of caffeine from four espresso shots. Prices land at $3.00 for the Kids size, $4.50 Small, $5.50 Medium, and $6.50 Large.

Here is what makes it different from a standard mocha. Every mocha at this Arkansas-born, drive-thru-only chain starts with chocolate milk rather than plain milk plus chocolate sauce, which is why the chocolate note reads smooth and milky instead of sharp and syrupy. The crew pulls fresh espresso, adds banana syrup and hazelnut syrup to the cup, then combines everything with the chocolate milk over ice, steams it for the hot version, or blends it with ice for the Chiller. The banana here is a flavored syrup, not fruit puree and not a real banana, which is exactly why it lands in banana bread territory rather than banana smoothie territory. Banana syrup plus hazelnut plus cocoa is the flavor fingerprint of a bakery loaf, and the roasted bitterness of the espresso does the job that toasted crust does in actual banana bread.

Because it is a syrup-driven build, it is also one of the easiest drinks on the board to dial in. Ask for one pump of each syrup instead of the standard pour and you drop the sugar noticeably while keeping the concept intact. Ask for an extra shot and it stops being a treat and becomes a legitimate morning coffee. That flexibility is why regulars keep it in rotation year round instead of treating it as a one-time novelty order.

Information for Banana Bread Mocha

Contains Milk
The chocolate milk base makes milk an allergen in every size. There is no version of the standard build that is dairy-free.
Vegetarian
Suitable for vegetarians as built. No gelatin or animal-derived ingredients beyond dairy.
Not Vegan (modifiable)
To get closest to vegan, ask for oat or almond milk in place of chocolate milk, add banana and hazelnut syrups, and confirm the chocolate sauce at your location is dairy-free. Many chocolate sauces are not, so some locations cannot make it fully vegan.
Not Keto Friendly
Even a Small carries 39g carbs and 38g sugar. A keto-leaning workaround is an iced americano with sugar-free hazelnut and a splash of heavy cream, which gets you the nut note without the chocolate milk carbs.
Nut-Free Concern
Hazelnut syrup is typically artificially flavored and tree-nut-free, but formulations vary by supplier. If you have a tree nut allergy, ask the crew to check the syrup bottle before ordering.
Gluten-Free Ingredients
No wheat-containing ingredients in the standard build despite the banana bread name. Shared equipment means no cross-contact guarantee.
Caffeinated
60mg Kids, 120mg Small and Medium, 240mg Large. A decaf shot swap is available at no flavor cost.
High Sugar
A Large delivers 76g sugar, which exceeds the American Heart Association daily added sugar guidance for adults. Half-sweet is the practical fix.

TASTE

What Does the 7 Brew Banana Bread Mocha Taste Like?

The aroma hits before the first sip, and it is genuinely bakery-like: warm cocoa, toasted nut, and that soft candied banana smell you get from banana bread cooling on a rack. The first sip leads with chocolate milk, rounded and creamy rather than intense, closer to a melted milk chocolate bar than to dark chocolate sauce.

Mid-sip the banana arrives and it is unmistakably banana syrup - sweet, slightly candied, with a Runts-candy edge that some drinkers love and others find artificial. What saves it from tasting like taffy is the hazelnut, which shows up almost immediately behind the banana and adds a toasted, nutty, walnut-adjacent depth. That combination is where the drink earns its name, because banana plus toasted nut plus cocoa is precisely what a slice of banana nut bread tastes like.

The finish is where the espresso finally speaks. Roasty bitterness cuts through the sweetness and leaves a cocoa-dusted, slightly nutty aftertaste rather than a sugar film. Texture-wise the Iced version is silky and light-bodied thanks to chocolate milk being thinner than half-and-half. The Hot version is the most bakery-accurate of the three because heat pushes the banana and hazelnut aromatics forward. The Chiller is the dessert extreme - thick, milkshake-like, and the sweetest of the three since blending mutes the coffee bitterness. Overall sweetness is high, roughly an 8 out of 10 at standard sweetness.

INGREDIENTS

What's Actually in the 7 Brew Banana Bread Mocha?

Espresso Freshly pulled shots - 1 shot Kids, 2 shots Small and Medium, 4 shots Large. Provides the roasted bitterness that keeps the syrups from tasting flat.
Chocolate Milk The standard base for every mocha on the menu instead of plain milk plus chocolate sauce. This is the source of most of the protein (7g Small, 12g Medium, 14g Large) and the milk allergen.
Banana Syrup A sweet flavored syrup, not fruit puree and not a real banana. Delivers the candied banana note. Sugar-free banana is not always stocked, so ask before assuming.
Hazelnut Syrup Toasted nut flavoring that supplies the nut-bread depth. Sugar-free hazelnut is a standard option at most locations.
Ice Served over ice for the Iced build, blended into the drink for the Chiller, omitted entirely for Hot.
Whipped Cream Optional topping, not standard on the base build. Adds roughly 50 to 80 calories depending on the pour.

Ingredients may vary by location. Always confirm with your barista.

First Time?

How to Order the Banana Bread Mocha for the First Time

If this is your first Banana Bread Mocha, order a Small Hot, half-sweet, with one extra espresso shot. That build is $4.50 plus the shot, comes in around 220 calories, and sits near 180mg caffeine. Hot is the version that most clearly reads as banana bread because heat carries the banana and hazelnut aromatics up out of the cup, and half-sweet keeps the 38g of sugar in a Small from burying the coffee.

Skip the Chiller on your first visit. It is delicious but blending mutes the espresso and amplifies the sweetness, so you end up tasting a banana chocolate milkshake rather than a mocha and you will not know whether you actually like the drink concept.

One honest expectation to set: the banana is a syrup, so it has a slightly candied quality. If you generally dislike banana-flavored candy, you may find it artificial, and the Brunette (hazelnut plus caramel on chocolate milk) is the better pick for you. If you love banana bread, banana pudding, or bananas Foster, this will likely become a regular order.

If you like it and want to upgrade, the Medium Iced at $5.50 is the best value on the board at about $0.23 per ounce, and adding a shot brings a Medium from 120mg to 180mg of caffeine for under 5 extra calories.

How to get a drink similar to the Banana Bread Mocha at other coffee chains

Similar flavored espresso drink
How to Order

Starbucks does not carry a banana syrup and has not sold bananas in US stores since May 2022, so a true match is not possible. The closest build is a Grande Iced Caffè Mocha with 2 pumps hazelnut syrup added and mocha sauce reduced to 2 pumps. You get the chocolate and toasted nut layers but none of the banana note that defines the 7 Brew version.

Key Difference

7 Brew uses a breve (half-and-half) base while Starbucks uses 2% milk by default. 7 Brew is typically creamier and sweeter.

Similar flavored drink
How to Order

Dutch Bros does stock banana flavoring and hazelnut, but there is no named banana bread drink on their menu, so you have to build it. Order a Medium Iced Mocha and ask for 2 pumps banana and 2 pumps hazelnut. Dutch Bros mochas use chocolate sauce with regular milk rather than a chocolate milk base, so the result reads sharper and more cocoa-forward and less creamy than the 7 Brew version.

Key Difference

Dutch Bros tends to run slightly sweeter. Both are drive-thru only chains with a similar vibe.

7 Brew Medium (24oz): $5.50 equals about $0.23 per oz. Starbucks Grande (16oz) Iced Mocha with an added syrup runs roughly $5.95 equals about $0.37 per oz. The 7 Brew Medium gives you 8 more ounces for about $0.45 less.

Best Time to Enjoy

Mid-morning is the sweet spot, roughly 9am to 11am. With 120mg of caffeine in a Small or Medium and 53g of sugar in a Medium, this drink functions as a coffee and a pastry at the same time, which makes it a strong replacement for a breakfast-plus-coffee run rather than an add-on to one. Fall and winter are when the Hot version really earns its name. Banana bread, cinnamon, and toasted nut flavors read as cold-weather comfort, and the hot build pushes those aromatics hardest. In summer, the Iced version stays perfectly drinkable and the Chiller becomes a legitimate afternoon dessert.

I ordered this on a whim expecting it to taste like banana candy and it genuinely tastes like my grandmother banana nut bread. The hazelnut is what makes it work. I get a Medium Hot with an extra shot and the coffee bitterness lines up perfectly with the chocolate milk. It has replaced the Brunette as my go-to and I am not going back.

Jenna Whitfield1 month ago

Really good but order it half-sweet or you will be on a sugar high by 10am. Standard sweetness on a Large was too much for me, and 76g of sugar explains why. Half-sweet with one extra shot is the sweet spot and still tastes exactly like banana bread. The Chiller version is basically dessert, which is fine, just know what you are getting.

Travis Boone3 months ago

The banana syrup reads a little artificial to me, kind of like banana Laffy Taffy over chocolate milk. My wife loves it so this is clearly personal preference. If you want a nutty mocha without the candy banana note, the Brunette does the hazelnut caramel chocolate thing better in my opinion. Still worth trying once because when it hits for people it really hits.

Copycat Recipe

How to Make the Banana Bread Mocha at Home

5 minutes
Ingredients
  • 2 shots (2 oz) freshly brewed espresso, or 4 oz strong moka pot coffee
  • 8 oz cold chocolate milk (whole milk chocolate milk works best)
  • 0.5 oz (1 pump) Torani Banana syrup, or Monin Banana syrup for a slightly less candied profile
  • 0.5 oz (1 pump) Torani Hazelnut syrup
  • 1 cup ice
  • Optional: pinch of ground cinnamon and a dash of vanilla extract to push it further toward real banana bread
  • Optional: whipped cream for topping
Instructions
1

Pull 2 shots of espresso and let them sit 60 seconds so they are not scalding.

2

Add the banana syrup and hazelnut syrup directly to the hot espresso and stir for 10 seconds so the syrups fully dissolve. Skipping this step is the number one reason homemade versions taste unevenly sweet.

3

Fill a 16oz cup with 1 cup ice.

4

Pour the syrup and espresso mixture over the ice.

5

Top with 8 oz cold chocolate milk and stir from the bottom up.

6

For the Hot version, steam the chocolate milk to 150F and pour over the syrup and espresso mixture instead of using ice. For a Chiller, blend everything with 1.5 cups ice for 30 seconds.

7

Optional: dust with cinnamon or add whipped cream.

Lighter Version

Use sugar-free syrups and skip whipped cream to save 100-150 calories.

FAQ

Common Questions

How many calories are in a 7 Brew Banana Bread Mocha?
The Banana Bread Mocha ranges from 160 calories in the Kids 10oz size to 450 calories in the Large 32oz. A Small (16oz) is 220 calories, and the most commonly ordered Medium (24oz) is 340 calories with 54g carbs, 53g sugar, 10g fat, and 12g protein. Most of the calories come from the chocolate milk base plus the banana and hazelnut syrups. Ordering half-sweet drops a Medium by roughly 40 to 50 calories and about 13g of sugar, and swapping the chocolate milk for almond milk with one pump of chocolate sauce brings a Medium down to roughly 200 calories.
Does the 7 Brew Banana Bread Mocha have real banana in it?
No. The banana flavor comes from banana flavoring syrup, not fresh fruit or banana puree. That is intentional, because syrup delivers the candied, baked banana note found in banana bread rather than the bright fresh flavor of a banana smoothie. If you want actual fruit texture, the blended smoothies on the menu use fruit purees instead, but those are non-coffee drinks with no espresso in them.
How much caffeine is in a Banana Bread Mocha?
Caffeine comes entirely from espresso shots: 60mg in the Kids size (1 shot), 120mg in both the Small and Medium (2 shots), and 240mg in the Large (4 shots). The Small and Medium have identical caffeine, so if you want more coffee strength without more sugar, order a Small with an extra shot for about 180mg instead of upsizing. Decaf shots are available and do not change the flavor of the drink.
Should I get the Banana Bread Mocha hot, iced, or as a Chiller?
Hot is the most bakery-accurate because heat lifts the banana and hazelnut aromatics and makes the drink smell and taste closest to a warm loaf. Iced is the best year-round balance and matches the listed nutrition of 340 calories for a Medium. The Chiller is blended and the sweetest, thickest option, closer to a banana chocolate milkshake with a coffee finish, and it runs higher in calories than the iced numbers because of the added blended sweetener. First-timers who want to actually taste the banana bread concept should start Hot in a Small.
Is the Banana Bread Mocha too sweet?
At standard sweetness it is one of the sweeter mochas on the board, around an 8 out of 10, with 53g of sugar in a Medium and 76g in a Large. The single most recommended fix from regulars is to order it half-sweet, which means one pump each of banana and hazelnut instead of the standard pour, and to add one extra espresso shot for 60mg more caffeine and under 5 extra calories. That combination keeps the banana bread flavor intact while letting the roasted coffee cut through instead of sitting behind the sugar.
