About This Drink
Sunset Black Tea

The 7 Brew Sunset Black Tea is a flavored iced tea built on freshly brewed black tea with three fruit syrups layered in - cherry, pineapple, and coconut - and it lands at just 80 calories and 20g of sugar in the popular Medium (24oz), with roughly 128mg of caffeine from the tea itself. A Large (32oz) runs $4.75 with 120 calories and 170mg of caffeine, while a Small (16oz) is $3.25 with only 40 calories. Because there is no dairy, no espresso, and no blending involved, it is one of the lightest and most allergen-friendly drinks on the entire 7 Brew menu.

7 Brew is a drive-thru-only coffee chain that started in Rogers, Arkansas, and while the brand is best known for the 7 Originals coffee lineup, the tea board is where regulars go when they want caffeine without cream. Sunset belongs to the flavored black tea family, which means the base is a straightforward brewed black tea - not a concentrate poured from a carton and not a powdered mix. The crew pours the tea over ice, adds the flavor syrups by pump count based on size, and shakes or stirs it so the syrups distribute instead of pooling at the bottom of the cup.

What makes Sunset distinctive is the coconut. Plenty of chains sell a cherry tea or a pineapple tea, but the coconut syrup is what turns this into something that actually earns the name - it rounds off the sharp edges of the cherry and gives the pineapple a creamy, sun-lotion-adjacent tropical warmth without adding a single gram of fat. The result reads like a virgin tropical punch with a tannic tea backbone underneath, which is exactly why it has become a go-to summer order for people who find fruit smoothies too heavy and plain iced tea too boring.

TASTE

What Does the 7 Brew Sunset Black Tea Taste Like?

The first thing you notice is the aroma through the straw hole - sweet cherry and pineapple, with a faint coconut sunscreen note that instantly reads as vacation. The color is a deep amber-red, darker than a peach tea, closer to a strong sun tea with cherry juice stirred in.

The first sip leads with cherry. It is the bright, candied maraschino style of cherry rather than a tart Bing cherry, and it hits the front of the tongue fast. Pineapple arrives a half second later and adds acidity, which is what keeps this from tasting like cough syrup - it sharpens the cherry and gives the middle of the sip some real fruit tang. Coconut is the quiet closer. It never announces itself as coconut flakes or coconut water; it shows up as a soft, creamy roundness that smooths the finish and makes the drink taste richer than a zero-fat beverage has any right to taste.

Underneath all three syrups, the black tea holds its ground. There is a light tannic grip on the back of the palate - the same gentle dryness you get from a strong glass of unsweetened iced tea - and it cleans up the sweetness so the drink does not turn cloying by the bottom of the cup. Texture is thin, crisp, and refreshing, with no syrupy coating on the lips.

Served hot, the profile shifts noticeably: coconut becomes the dominant note, the pineapple mellows, and it drinks more like a tropical dessert tea.

What's Actually in the 7 Brew Sunset Black Tea?

Brewed Black Tea Freshly steeped black tea poured over ice, providing all of the caffeine (53mg Kids up to 170mg Large) and the tannic backbone
Cherry Syrup Sweet candied-cherry flavoring, closer to maraschino than tart dark cherry - the loudest note in the first sip
Pineapple Syrup Adds the acidic tropical tang that balances the cherry and keeps the drink from tasting flat
Coconut Syrup Creamy rounding agent with zero fat, responsible for the smooth finish and the sunset-tropical identity
Ice Standard fill for the iced version; you can request light ice for more tea volume or extra ice for a slushier chill
Sugar-Free Syrup Option All three flavors can be swapped to sugar-free on request, dropping sugar from 20g to near zero on a Medium

First Time?

How to Order the Sunset Black Tea for the First Time

If this is your first Sunset, order a Medium (24oz, $4.00) iced at standard sweetness. That size gives you 80 calories, 20g of sugar, and about 128mg of caffeine, which is the sweet spot for judging whether the cherry-forward profile works for you without committing to a 32oz Large.

Here is the one thing to know going in: Sunset is a sweet drink, not a tea-forward one. The cherry syrup leads hard, and people who expect an unsweetened tea with a hint of fruit are usually surprised. If you generally order your iced tea unsweetened, ask for half-sweet on the first try - it drops a Medium to roughly 40 calories and 10g of sugar and lets the black tea tannins come through.

If you love it and want to make it your regular, the two most common upgrades from regulars are light ice on a Large (more actual tea for your $4.75) and dropping the cherry in favor of extra pineapple and coconut for a pina-colada-style version. And if you are caffeine sensitive, note that a Large carries 170mg - roughly the same as a strong cup of drip coffee - so keep it to the earlier half of the day.

Pro tip: Don't be afraid to ask your brewista for recommendations — they love helping first-timers!

Similar flavored espresso drink
How to Order

Order the closest equivalent and ask for matching syrups.

Key Difference

Moderate. The brewed black tea base and light body are very comparable, but Starbucks cannot replicate the cherry-pineapple-coconut trio, so the finished flavor is noticeably different.

Similar flavored drink
How to Order

Order the closest equivalent and ask for matching syrups.

Key Difference

High. Same brewed tea format, same syrup approach, and Dutch Bros stocks all three needed flavors. Expect a slightly sweeter result since their standard pump counts on flavored teas tend to run heavy.

7 Brew Large (32oz): $4.75 = about $0.15 per oz. Starbucks Venti Shaken Iced Black Tea (24oz): around $4.25 plus roughly $0.80 for two syrup pumps = about $5.05, or $0.21 per oz. You get 8oz more drink for about $0.30 less at 7 Brew.

Best Time to Enjoy

Sunset is at its best as a mid-morning to early-afternoon drink, roughly 9am to 2pm. With 128mg of caffeine in a Medium and 170mg in a Large, it delivers a meaningful lift, but the caffeine arrives through black tea rather than espresso, so most people describe the energy as steadier and less spiky than a double-shot latte. It also shines as a hot-weather afternoon reset. Because it is fat-free, dairy-free, and only 80 calories in a Medium, it does not sit heavy the way a blended smoothie or shake does after lunch, which makes it a smart pick if you want something sweet and cold without a 3pm sugar-crash-plus-dairy-slump combo.

Sunset is my entire summer. I get a Large with light ice and it tastes like tropical punch that somehow only has 120 calories. I switched from getting a Blondie every morning and I do not even miss it - the caffeine is enough to get me going without the crash. The coconut is what makes it, do not let them skip it.

Dylan Fischer1 month ago

Really solid flavored tea and I love that it is dairy-free so my lactose intolerant wife and I can both order it. Only knock is that full sweet is a lot - the standard Medium at 20g of sugar tastes closer to fruit punch than tea to me. I now order it half-sweet and it is way more balanced. The tea itself is legitimately fresh brewed, not the syrupy bottled stuff.

Priya Ramanathan3 months ago

It is fine, just not for me. The cherry syrup tastes like maraschino cherries from a jar and it kind of steamrolls the pineapple. I ordered it a second time without the cherry and just pineapple and coconut and liked that a lot more. If you want an actual tea-forward drink, the plain black tea with a little peach is a better bet. Nothing wrong with the quality, just very candy sweet.

How to Make the Sunset Black Tea at Home

5 minutes
Ingredients
  • 12 oz strong brewed black tea, chilled (2 standard black tea bags such as Lipton or Twinings English Breakfast steeped 4 minutes in 12 oz water)
  • 0.75 oz (1.5 tbsp) Torani Cherry syrup
  • 0.75 oz (1.5 tbsp) Torani Pineapple syrup
  • 0.5 oz (1 tbsp) Monin Coconut syrup
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • Optional: 1 lime wedge, squeezed, to sharpen the pineapple
Instructions
1

Steep 2 black tea bags in 12 oz of just-off-boil water for exactly 4 minutes - longer than that and the tannins turn bitter against the fruit syrups. Remove bags and refrigerate until cold, at least 30 minutes.

2

Fill a 24oz cup or shaker with 2 cups of ice.

3

Add the cherry, pineapple, and coconut syrups directly over the ice so they do not sink into a syrup layer at the bottom.

4

Pour the chilled black tea over the syrups.

5

Cap and shake hard for 10 seconds, or stir vigorously for 20 seconds. Shaking is what gives the 7 Brew version its slightly aerated, crisp mouthfeel.

6

Taste and adjust: add another 0.25 oz coconut syrup for a creamier finish, or a squeeze of lime if the cherry is reading too candy-sweet.

7

For the sugar-free version, swap in Torani Sugar Free Cherry, Torani Sugar Free Coconut, and Monin Sugar Free Pineapple in the same measurements. Calories drop from roughly 80 to under 10.

Lighter Version

Use sugar-free syrups and skip whipped cream to save 100-150 calories.

FAQ

Common Questions

How many calories are in a 7 Brew Sunset Black Tea?
The 7 Brew Sunset Black Tea has 20 calories in a Kids (10oz), 40 calories in a Small (16oz), 80 calories in a Medium (24oz), and 120 calories in a Large (32oz). Every single calorie comes from the cherry, pineapple, and coconut syrups since brewed black tea and ice contribute zero. There is no fat and no protein in any size. If you want it lower, ask for sugar-free versions of all three syrups to drop a Medium to under 10 calories, or order half-sweet to cut it to roughly 40 calories.
How much caffeine is in a 7 Brew Sunset Black Tea?
Caffeine comes entirely from the brewed black tea and scales with size: about 53mg in a Kids, 85mg in a Small, 128mg in a Medium, and 170mg in a Large. For context, a Large Sunset (170mg) has less caffeine than a Large latte with 4 espresso shots (240mg) and far less than a 7 Brew cold brew, which can exceed 300mg. Because tea caffeine releases alongside L-theanine, most people report a smoother, less jittery lift than an equivalent dose of espresso.
Is the 7 Brew Sunset Black Tea dairy-free and vegan?
Yes. As ordered standard, the Sunset Black Tea contains brewed black tea, cherry syrup, pineapple syrup, coconut syrup, and ice - no milk, no ice cream mix, and no allergens listed in any size. That makes it one of the few naturally vegan and dairy-free drinks on the 7 Brew menu, unlike the smoothies and shakes which are built on a dairy ice cream mix. Just avoid adding half-and-half or whipped topping, and if you want it creamy, ask for a splash of oat, almond, or coconut milk instead.
How much sugar is in a 7 Brew Sunset Black Tea, and can I make it sugar-free?
Sugar runs 5g in a Kids, 10g in a Small, 20g in a Medium, and 30g in a Large - all of it added sugar from the three flavor syrups. Yes, you can make it effectively sugar-free: ask for sugar-free cherry, pineapple, and coconut syrups, which brings a Medium down to roughly 1-2g of sugar and under 10 calories. Sugar-free availability can vary by location and by flavor, so if only one or two are available, combine sugar-free syrups with a half-sweet request on the rest.
Is the 7 Brew Sunset Black Tea keto friendly?
Not as ordered. A Medium contains 20g of net carbs and a Large contains 30g, which would consume most or all of a standard 20-25g daily keto carb budget. Ordered with all sugar-free syrups, however, it becomes one of the most keto-friendly items on the entire menu at roughly 1-3g of carbs and near zero calories, since the base is just brewed tea and ice. A sugar-free Large Sunset is a common order for people doing keto who still want 170mg of caffeine and something that tastes like fruit punch.
